Pensive is an original, hand-pulled etching of a young man lost in thought. This type of original printmaking is called aquatint. The greys and blacks were achieved by dropping various amount of rosin on the metal plate and etching the particle into the plate. I am especially pleased with the value contrast in this print and the interesting mood the figure creates in the shadowed room. I mostly work in color but when I do black and white I like to have a wide value range. The greys are the color and I like a lot of variety in the tones. The white background adds a great accent to the work.
